Matariki is the Maori name for the cluster of stars known as the pleiades or the seven sisters. In some maori myths ‘matariki’ is the eldest sister and guides her younger siblings through the winter. Matariki herds (marks) the start of the maori new year. According to Maori myth, Ranginui the sky Father and Papatuanuku the earth Mother got separated by their children. The god of the wind (Tawhirimatea) their son became so angry that he tore his eyes out and threw them into the heavens.

Matariki rises in mid-winter, and it’s name means ‘eyes of god’ (mata ariki) or ‘little eyes’ (mata riki). When the Matariki stars shine bright it shows that the year will be warm and hopeful..

Traditionally matariki is a time for remembering loved ones who died in the past year. But it's also a happy time of year. It's a good time for planting and collecting crops, planting trees, going fishing, and to go hunting for birds.  You can also celebrate matariki by dancing, singing, feasting, and making & flying kites.

Matariki was once very popular but sadly stopped in the early 1940’s. Then in the early 2000’s matariki was revived, at first only a few people celebrated. Then just a few years later there were thousands and thousands of people celebrating matariki again.

Friday was the last day of the week, also it was the end of Samoan language week. It was Miss Haslem’s last day with us. I came to school to see Aden and Ayla’s parents near the umu. Later on my Nana came to the back of the hall. The bell rang and I said goodbye to her. After the Room 6 assembly the whole school went to see the Umu.

Lawrence, George and Mr T were preparing the food to go onto the Umu. An Umu is a cooking process and it entails cooking on top of the ground different to the tongan Umu.

Mr T was cutting up some coconuts into pieces. I had a little piece for a try. It took forever to chew the coconut down my throat. I kept chewing and chewing and it wouldn't go down my throat. I went to my bag and got a drink of water. It started to go down my throat. I never wanted to eat coconut again. When we were doing maths Mr Tyrell knocked on the door saying we could go and check the Umu again. The whole school went down to see the Umu. When we went to see the umu it was burning with wood, newspaper and taro leaves.

We all went back to class having a short amount of time until lunch time. When the bell rang the whole school went down to the junior playground to raise the Samoan flag and sing the Samoan national anthem. After that we went down to the hall. Father Benedict said a prayer before we ate. We thanked the Samoan community for spending their time cooking food for the school. We started from youngest to eldest to eat. The line finally got to room 2. Miss Paton was choosing kids to go and get their food. Some kids were not listening so they did not know that Miss Paton was choosing kids. Miss Paton picked me to go and get my food.

I waited in line. When I was near to getting my food I saw my Nana doing the pork, Sierra’s Nana doing the chop suey and Aden and Ayla’s Brothers were handing food out too. When I got to the line to get my food. After I got my food I went outside to eat. I realised I was the only one eating outside and the rest of the school were eating inside. Later on Ceazah-Blue came out to eat with me. After a few minutes Deevon came out. After I ate I went to play in the playground. I noticed that the juniors were playing on the senior playground. I was just playing for a little bit then had a drink of water. When the bell rang I noticed that the time was 2:30PM and that we couldn't present our migration slides.

We packed up our class and went to sit down. Miss Haslem gave Miss Paton a gift with two key chains with her name on it. Then Miss Haslem gave us goodie bags with chocolate inside. We all gave her a hug and left the classroom, saying our goodbyes to her. I went home. I had a great time at school expressing my culture, but it was a sad day because Miss Haslem left but that didn’t stop me from having fun at school.

The end!
